Annual Corncrake Survey 2026 – let us
know when you hear one!

Great News!  Corncrakes have arrived back in Waternish and the first report of their "Crex-Crex" call has been received.

Their arrival signals the start of RSPB Scotland’s Annual Corncrake Survey, so please let us know when and where you hear one.

In addition to counting the birds, we identify individuals from their call patterns (Scottish Birds: March 2025; Robert Arnold). Last year, of the 28 different call patterns we recorded, 9 were similar to those found in 2024 suggesting a return rate of 33%.

This is in line other research and highlights just how hazardous their ~10000 mile migratory journey is. It is vital for us to provide disturbance-free summer breeding habitat so corncrakes can successfully raise chicks and maintain a population. Your reports support this.

If you hear or see a Corncrake please let us know where, when, and if possible, a short video or audio recording, which allows us to analyse the bird’s call pattern. Corncrakes are extremely rare and they, their nests and eggs are protected under UK law so it is important that we don’t disturb or approach them. Best way is to keep out of the meadows and stay on the roads.

Good luck!
