Waternish Hall Community Fund
waternish_signpost.jpg
WATERNISH COMMUNITY HALL COMMUNITY FUND

As part of the requirements for running the 100 Club, once the prizes have been paid out each month, the remaining money is divided equally between the Hall Current Account and a Community Fund Account.

The Hall Current Account uses the money from the 100 club to support the running of the Hall but the Community Fund is held in trust to be used for the direct benefit of the community. Some of this money may be used by the Hall to run free events for the benefit of the community but also could be used to support Community Projects.

We are looking for ideas on how we can spend some of this Community Fund to benefit the community. One such suggestion we are looking at is to purchase some benches to place around Waternish to enable people to rest and enjoy our area. We are also considering purchasing some fold up chairs to be used at the War Memorial when a Remembrance Service is held. However, we need more ideas about specific projects that we could support.

If you have any ideas about small projects that we could support please contact………

Waternish Hall Hire Charges
hall.jpg
The hire charges for the Hall have remained the same for about 10 years. The costs of insurance, energy, licencing and service charges have all increased and regrettably we need to increase the hire charges as a consequence.

Effective from 1st May 2024 the charges will be as follows:
  • Waternish resident - drop in club: £2 per person
  • Waternish resident - occasional use/weekly/monthly user: £12 per hour or part hour
  • Waternish based - commercial or statutory organisations: £20 per hour or part hour
  • Non resident - private function/commercial or statutory: £35 per hour or part hour
  • Local organisation occasional charity event: £0
If you have any questions about the above, or wish to contact the committee for any other reason, then you can get in touch via the Contact Information tab on the Hall website.

RSPB Annual Corncrake Survey
Corncrake.jpg
Corncrakes on the Isle of Skye – RSPB Scotland Annual Corncrake Survey 2024

Our Corncrakes were off the mark sharp this year with our first bird heard on the 17th of April – to my knowledge the earliest in my 15 years as Corncrake Project Officer here on the island. And also the first year I heard a Corncrake before hearing a cuckoo –not that it is a race!

Please let us know if you hear or see a Corncrake – a message/text/phone to the number below is ideal, noting the date, time and location that you heard it.

For the past few years we have tracked some of our Corncrakes through the summer using the unique pulse patterns of their ‘crex crex’ call. If you can take a short voice memo or video on your phone that would be very helpful – please get in touch if you would like more information and visit http://www.robertarnold.co.uk/crex/crex.htm

These birds are extremely rare and they, their nests and eggs are protected under UK law so it is important that we don’t disturb or approach them. Best way is to keep out of the meadows and stay on the roads. Good luck!

We look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks and have a great summer!

Defibrillator News
lucky2Bhere.jpg
I have been contacted by Highland Council to inform me that the defibrillator currently located at Knockbreck school needs to be moved, as they are discontinuing the electricity supply. There is no rush for this as we are approaching summer but it will need to be resited by winter.

Fortunately, a local resident has volunteered to host the defibrillator in a new location nearby. A further update giving the date and exact site of the relocation will therefore be made once this has been confirmed, nearer the time of the move.

Thank you
Pat Matheson
