A new local history book has been published which tells the stories of the 40 men whose names are carved on the Glendale war memorial. 'The Glendale Heroes' has been written and published by Roland Lopez, with help from several natives of Glendale. This book follows three years after the collaboration with friend and neighbour DJ Campbell on 'The Names on the Memorial', which recounts the service of Waternish men who fell in the wars.
The story of the book was recounted in an article in the WHFP last week, which can be downloaded or viewed at the following link:
Unfortunately, the key to the identity of the young corporal on the front cover was only discovered after the book had been published. The story behind this discovery would probably warrant an extra chapter on its own, but whilst the identity of the soldier was originally a mystery, it can now be revealed to be John Mackenzie of Tolsta, Lewis. In addition, it turns out that he is an ancestor of at least two current residents of Waternish.
'The Glendale Heroes' is available from from both Glendale and Dunvegan Post Offices, price £25, or direct from Roland by post. Contact Roland on
